Diseases transmitted from animals to humans

HOW TO MAINTAIN A SAFE ENVIRONMENT WHILE ENJOYING THE BENEFITS OF HAVING A PET?

Regular follow-up with your veterinarian

  • Annual exams.

  • Quick consultation in case of health problems.

  • Stool analysis (corpology) and adapted deworming.

  • Prevention with vaccines.

  • Specific research for zoonoses when the animal is in a family with a person more at risk.

Wise choice when it comes to
the adoption of a new animal

  • Be well informed about the chosen species (behaviour, care, diseases that can be transmitted).

  • Prefer an adult animal to a young animal.

  • Take the necessary time to educate the animal.

  • Faeces (fecal-oral) (ex: caressing an animal and bringing your hands to your face without washing them)

WHAT TO DO TO REDUCE YOUR RISK

RIGOROUS HYGIENE

  • Collect excrements or urine by wearing gloves and washing hands carefully;

  • Frequently collect excrements (ideally everytime the animal makes faeces);

  • Do not kiss your pet; prefer caresses with hands;

  • Keep the fur and skin of the animal as clean as possible by giving baths regularly.

EDUCATION

  • Practice quickly recognizing signs of agression/impatience in your pet to avoid injuries (scratched, bites);

  • Keep the claws of your pet short by cutting them frequently;

  • Prevent your pet from eating faeces;

  • Put the necessary time to educate your pet to avoid unwanted behaviors that
    increase the risk of disease transmission (chewing hands, licking your face and hands, rummaging through garbage cans, getting on beds, getting on kitchen counters, etc.).

Good nutrition

  • Feed your pet with a well-balanced quality diet;

  • Never feed raw food to your pet (very high risk of transmission of fatal diseases with this type of food);

  • Avoid your pet to eat prey or give a treatment against parasites (deworming) accordingly if it is impossible to control it.

Avoid frequenting animal gathering places

  • Avoid dog parks;

  • Avoid taking your pet to a farm.
